Both you and your dog need exercise in order to live long, healthy lives. You can kill two birds with one stone by adapting a workout routine that works for both you and your four legged companion. There are a wide variety of different ways that you can work out with your dog in order to get the best possible results for your health and your dog's health as well. Here is a guide to working out with your dog for your enjoyment and his.
- * You should always start out slowly and gradually, slowly but surely increasing the intensity and the time spent exercising with your dog. This will help to strengthen your body and your dog's body, making sure that both are properly conditioned for the road ahead.
- * Make sure that you are constantly aware of how your dog is feeling. If your dog is drooling or stumbling, having difficulties breathing or has a long droopy tongue, then you need to slow down or stop immediately. Sit down and take a break for now, and then start thinking about making the workout for tomorrow shorter just in case. Your dog cannot sweat the way you do, so if it's hot out, take extra precautions to keep your furry friend cool and comfortable.
- * Be aware of how the ground feels on your dog's feet, because asphalt and concrete are hard on his or her feet, especially on days that are particularly warm. Look for grass, dirt paths and other soft surfaces to give your dog a more comfortable workout routine.
- * The longer that you and Fido work out, the more water that he or she is going to need. Buy and bring along a special collapsible dish to make sure that your pet is staying as hydrated as you like to.
- * Make sure that you are taking care to be realistic about the limitations of your pet. Smaller breeds may enjoy going for a brisk walk, but a more strenuous hike is not really their thing. Dogs with thinner coats are not going to tolerate colder climates, just as dogs with thicker coats are not going to deal with the heat very well. You should be accommodating them accordingly.
- * Try to avoid the more strenuous types of exercise with your dog until he or she has finished growing, which is around 9 months to 12 months for most dog breeds.
Keep in mind that working out with a dog as your buddy can truly be motivating, and it can make the entire exercise thing seem more enjoyable over all. If you have a four legged friend, consider turning him or her into your workout buddy and you may be able to completely revolutionize how you feel about working out, getting fit and losing weight in the process.
