Wii Fit: Healthy Weight Loss?

wiifitHave you ever wondered if those video game exercise programs work? Can you achieve healthy weight loss playing a video game?

The Wii Fit is the most popular of the weight loss programs that are on the market today. It has sold many thousands of units, but some wonder if it really leads to weight loss.

The answer is that the Wii Fit is a solid exercise program, if you use it. Like every weight loss program, it has some pros and cons, so if you are aiming for healthy weight loss with using a video game as your trainer, read on.

The Wii Fit works with the popular Wii gaming system. It consists of a monitoring section and different exercise sections: yoga, strength, aerobic and balance. You can choose what exercises to do and from which category you'd like to work.

The Wii Fit has some features that make it ideal for certain people. For example, the game tracks your BMI and weight every day. It notes how many times you've tried each exercise, and keeps a record of the top 10 times. The records include everyone who plays the game, not just your records, but the game also notes your personal best when you beat your own record, even if you don't crack the top ten.

The game allows you to create your own avatar that you see while exercising. It also provides a wide variety of games and exercises from which to choose, providing different activities for different interests.

There are virtual trainers (one male, one female - you choose) that help you use proper posture and form when doing the strength and yoga exercises.

The game tracks the amount of time you spend actually exercising, and keeps both daily and cumulative records of the total time. You can add in time that you spend exercise somewhere other than on the Wii Fit, if that's something important to you.

The Wii Fit can help with healthy weight loss because it starts out at a low level for each exercise, then as you become more practiced and more fit, it moves up to more vigorous workouts. At any time, however, you can drop back down to exercises that require less time or exertion.

Still, there are things about the program that some consider more negative.

For example, the program gives lots of tips and suggestions after each exercise. It takes several minutes to do the simple body test that checks your weight and BMI, as it goes through the same suggestions each time you perform the test.

For those who use the program frequently, these reminders may become repetitious. They also add to the time it takes to complete a workout. For every 45 minutes of exercise, you can count on at least 15 and maybe 20 minutes of time spent listening to suggestions and tips or moving from one exercise to another.

To get a real aerobic workout with the Wii Fit, you do need to use a number of the running exercises, although the rhythm boxing and hula hoops can provide solid, high intensity aerobic exercise as well.

If you do the running, remember that you still need to follow good exercise guidelines for footwear. Running without shoes, even running in place, can lead to foot problems. Taking the shoes off and on (you don't use the Wii Fit balance board with shoes, only socks) can be a pain for some people.

The final consideration is that you still have to work to make the Wii Fit succeed in helping you with healthy weight loss. You need to watch your caloric intake, cut down portion size, and really work with the aerobic as well as other exercises to be successful.

If you do these things, then you'll find that this video game can actually help you with healthy weight loss.
