I think limiting tv and gaming time and being a role model to get out and go for walks, play at the park are good ideas too.

Great article, which I really think nails the key on the head is to start early, so that your children become accustomed from the get-go to a lifestyle of eating healthy and exercising daily.

Jade also makes a very good point. Sometimes all you need to do is listen to your children and let them guide you instead of trying to fashion everything for your children. Children in general will want to run around and be active and expend all the excess energy they have. If you take them out on fun activities over weekends and after school if time permits and then listen to them and see which things excite and engage them, it will go a long way to supporting them effectively.

As far as exercise goes, if your kids are asking to participate in a physical activity, then if possible let them participate. They may already have the motivation, they may just need equipment and a ride to practice a couple of times a week.

My parents never got this, I would have loved to join a sports team, but all they ever did was push areobics tapes on me which I hated. And I loved to ride my bike, but when I outgrew my old one they bought me one that was too big for me and I couldn't ride anymore. I loved to go running outside, but they'd never let me out of the house or take me someplace where I could go for a run. You'd be surprised at how much your kids want to get up and move if they only had the opportunity...
