We all know that making change in our lives is both mental and behavioral in nature. Research has shown that in order to make even the most basic changes in our lives, a four step process is involved. The steps are to be positive, add support, make a gesture and then essentially just to get it done. Here is a look at the fore step process and how both mental and behavioral processes go into making changes in our lives. This applies not only to diet and weight loss but also every other aspect of our lives as well.
- Be Positive!
Think about it: Being positive works for parents, coaches and bosses, so why not let it work for you as well? Stop blaming yourself for your weight; otherwise you will have depression and a foul mood to contend with. Instead, your job is going to be to focus and to wok on what you are capable of, what it'll take to get you there, and why it's good for you. Once you figure out these small but powerful details you can work on learning how to succeed in the game of weight loss. Get rid of the guilt, get rid of the negativity, and start making rational and long term decisions for change.
- Add Support!
You may not realize it, but there are a lot of things and people out there that want to sabotage your weight loss efforts. Nothing may be wrong with their intentions, but that does not mean they are doing you any good. What you need to do is to develop a positive support system of people that know your goals and obstacles, your weaknesses and your strengths, and who are willing to be positive, supportive forces in your life. This is a big step for making positive changes in your life.
- Make a Gesture!
Sometimes all it takes is a small gesture to show that you are serious. Gestures can be small and still generously jump start the psychology behind making change in your life. Buy a pedometer, or a new pair of walking shoes. Trade up your gym membership. Do something, however small, to show that you are in it for the long haul. These small gestures really do add up with time and effort.
- Get it Done!
Once you have kick started things with a small gesture, the next step is to jump right in to your change. If you cannot make a huge commitment, break your "change" into smaller changes and implement them one at a time - But realize that once you're in, you're in for the long haul, and don't back down. Make one commitment, make it happen, then move on to the next commitment. Keep going until you have made all of the necessary positive changes in your life, and imagine how good you will feel then!
