August 9th, 2008 — Weight Loss Journal, review
Recently, I had the pleasure of being contacted by a representative of Dr. Michael Snyder. Dr. Snyder is a Bariatric surgeon. He wanted me to try something for free... No it was not a complementary Bariatric surgery.
It turns out that Dr. Snyder had invented a product called the FullBar. The idea behind the Fullbar is to provide a healthy and delicious bar when eaten with a glass of water fills your stomach and provides the felling of of being full. Clever name right?
So, the complimentary bars arrived Thursday. There were 3 flavors in my package: Cocoa Crisp, Penut Butter Crunch, and Carmel Apple Crisp. I can attest they all taste great and are made with great ingredients like Agave Nectar and Brown Rice Syrup. From a hunger control stand point they work too... I ate mine with lunch and had a hard time eating anything for lunch or dinner.
My concern was the calories, carbs, and the protein to carb ratio. At 170 calories the bar is 14% of my daily allowance. The bar contains 31g of carbohydrates and only 4 g of dietary fiber; therefore, a countable carbohydrate count of 27g. That is 3 of my 6 carbohydrates for the day. The bar contains 5g of protein, which give the bar a 5:1 carbohydrate to protein ratio. The ratio was the issue my weight loss doctor had with the bars. In order to balance the ratio I ate the bars with 2 servings of roasted edamame.
Intellectually, the glycemic index of the carbs should be taken into account, but at this time such information is not available and has not been incorporated into the nutritional labels of products in the United States. For example, refined sugar is not the same as Agave Nectar yet the grams of carbohydrates count the same in my diet.
Up until my own doctor pointed out the high amount and ratio of carbs I was very high on this product. Unfortunately, this product doesn't fit into my medically assisted diet. That doesn't change the fact, I think this product could help a lot of people.

July 5th, 2008 — drink, food, recipe
I may have accidentally stumbled onto the perfect sugar substitute: Agave Nectar.
Agave Nectar (or Agave Syrup) is made from the heart of several agave species... It is made from the same starting point as tequila, the heart of the plant known as the piña. It is 3 times sweeter than sugar, but what really makes this a special food is the fact that it has a glycemic index of 32 (very low) and does not affect blood sugar levels.
The main carbohydrate is a complex carbohydrate called inulin or fructosan. It is this carbohydrate that gives both the intense sweetness and the very low glycemic index.
I personally experienced the sweetness and great taste of this product on vacation... The restaurant was offering a marg-o-jito... Mint and a lime muddled with one tablespoon of agave nectar (The recipe then called for mixing muddled mixture 2 to 1 fresh squeezed lime juice with blanco tequila.) I had them mix it 2 to 1 blanco tequila to fresh squeezed lime juice... The result was one of the best tasting tequila drinks I have ever had... But it was a little too sweet for me so I ended up mixing the second half of my drink with a glass of water. Perfection in a refreshing form... My recommendation for this drink...
Ingredients
- 1/4 lime
- 1 Mint leaf
- 1 Tablespoon raw agave nectar
- 2 oz premium blanco tequila
- 1 oz fresh squeezed lime juice (substitute Odwalla Summer Time Lime)
- 3oz filtered water

Recipe
- Muddle 1/4 lime wedge, 1 mint leaf, 1 tablespoon raw agave nectar, with some ice. How to Muddle

April 20th, 2008 — about, medicine
With the program that I am on, I am currently taking Phentermine HCl 30mg. With this post I wanted to share what my doctors says about this drug... The page in my program is taking about 2 drugs at the same time Phendimetrazine and Phentermine. I am currently only on Phentermine and have little or very mild side effects.
Phendimetrazine and Phentermine are sympathomimetic amine. They work by affecting appetite control centers in teh brain. They promote weight loss by convincing the body that it is not hungry. They decrease appetite by increasing serotonin or catecholamine -- two neurotransmitters that affect mood and appetite. Phendimetrazine and Phentermine are used as a short-term supplements to diet and exercise in the treatment of obesity.
You should take these medications one hour before a meal on an empty stomach. Take with one glass of water. Do not take them in the evening becasue they may cause insomnia.
You shoud not take this medicine if you have:
- Severe heart disease
- Severe high blood pressure
- Glaucoma
- Allergy to this medication
- Recent history of drug abuse
- Recent MAOI use (isocarboxazid (Marplan), tranylcypromine (Parnate), or phenelzine (Nardil), Harnaline, Iproclozide, Nialamide, Selegiline, Tolaxatone in the the last 14 days.)
You may not be able to take these medications, or you may require a lower dose or special monitoring during treatment if you have any of the conditions listed below:
- Seizure disorder
- Untreated thyroid disorder
Phendimetrazine and Phentermine, like all medications, may cause side effects. In studies the most common side effects were:
- Restlessness
- Nervousness or anxiety
- Insomnia
- Dry mouth or an unpleasant taste in you mouth
- Diarrhea or constipation
Other side effect that may occur include:
- Headache or dizziness
- Changes in libido
- Blurred vision
- Stomach upset
These side effect are generally mild and have usually not caused people to stop taking their medication. If you develop a symptom that you think might be a side effect, stop taking the medication and notify your doctor so that he or she can advise you on what to do.
And if you still want to read more consider reading what wikipedia has to say on Phentermine.

April 16th, 2008 — Meals, exercise
I started the day with a large breakfast after going to the dentist. Starting the program yesterday was a bit of chance... There was a lunchtime opening so I went. I know it sounds like I am doing this on a whim, but I am not... I have been planning (counting on) starting the program ever since I "won" the charity auction. I am committed this time...
After the consultation, I took my various medications and went back to work... Around 5 I was restless and decided to exercise... I played 12 holes of golfs. I walked the course and carried my bag... It is a very hilly 9 hole course that is a hidden gem (literally). (It also happens to be the site of my one and only hole in one.)
I drank plenty of water... For dinner I had 6 slices of smoked turkey in 2 sittings. The first 3 slices when I got home from golf and the second 3 after my shower...
At this point I have not been hungry since breakfast (combo big breakfast and drugs), but I felt I should eat something...
Another glass of water with a serving of sugar-free metamucil before bed (to keep you regular)...
Despite being warned I might not be able to sleep well the 1st couple of days on the medications I had no trouble sleeping... I suppose day 1 is just a primer, tomorrow the diet and drugs will be in effect all day.
Also I purchased 2 items from amazon (both have been added to my recommended sidebar)... The 1st was recommended by my Dr: Living Large: A Big Man's Ideas on Weight, Success, and Acceptance
. The second was a high capacity bathroom scale: Health o meter 844KL High Capacity Digital Bathroom Weight Scale with 1.5 in. LCD, 440 lb x 0.1 lb
.
