Getting Past Your First Craving

Today marks day 6 in my medically assisted weightloss journey. Sunday evening I had my first craving and I made it through...

We were having dinner at my wife's parents house... It was a bit of an event... Needless to say I was expecting temptation...

Here is how I prepared... (Water, Water, Water)

Pre-exercise snack... 5 almonds and 1 serving skim milk mozzarella.

Morning Exercise: I went to the gym and did 30 minutes of cardio (20 fast uphill walking and 10 stationary bike.) I then lifted weights...

Breakfast: 2 serving of egg substitute (1/2 cup), 2 servings fat free american cheese (2 slices), 1 serving of non fat cottage cheese (1/4 cup). About 20 minutes after breakfast I had 3 large asparagus which is 2 carbs.

Lunch: 2 servings slices turkey pastrami (3 slices). 1 serving skim milk mozzarella.

Then right before leaving to go to my in-laws I had 5 almonds.

So far my daily count is 9 protein and 2 carbs... (I get to exchange nonfat cottage cheese and cheese for protein plus 10 almonds.) My doctor mentioned I could have a 5 almond snack, but it is not in my book so I will have to ask how it counts...

I brought a nonfat no sugar dressing to dinner...

Dinner:

The hors dourves... There was an unleavened pizza that looks really good, but I opted for broccoli dipped in the salad dressing I brought. I estimate I had 1 serving of broccoli.

The actual dinner was the hard part, but it was easy enough... I had just the broth of the mathza ball soup and chicken with the skin pulled off. I had a leg and thigh and ate a little more than 1/2. I also had asparagus and zucchini (both were done to perfection on the grill.)

I estimate my total count for the day being 13 protein and 5 carbs.

So what was the temptation... The unleavened pizza, the excellent wine that was served, and the matzah ball soup... Desert was not a temptation as I was full after the meal.

If you are facing a known event were temptation will be present... I encourage you to follow my example...

  • WATER
  • Exercise early in the day
  • Eat well but within you diet before the meal leading up to the event
  • Eat 5 almonds 1/2 hour prior to the temptation
  • Bring you own salad dressing because you can have all the salad you can eat

Saturday Weekly Recap and Links

Given that I have already talked about my new diet the medically assisted food based 1200 calorie low carb low fat diet and first full day and my weekly MIC injection with my second day it is time to talk about the rest of the week...

Before I tell you about the rest of my week I would like to point you at an interesting post on BMI... I wrote a post yesterday on using the BMI calculation to determine how much weight to lose... I wrote the article knowing full well that BMI will not accurately determine when I reach a normal weight (I have more muscle than most)... Lazy Man articulates this aspect of BMI very well in How Do You Measure your Body. Then for a lighter humerous post you should check out Fat People Cause Global Warming: Fat Isn’t Very Green by Fat Man Unleased.

I have been feeling mentally energetic, but a bit unfocused... This seems to be a normal initial reaction to the daily Phentermine HCI 30 mg (more on this drug tomorrow). Thus far I have been able to exercise every day... On Thursday when I was playing golf (I only played 6 holes because of 2 slow groups in front of me that skipped, but they were the hilly ones) I felt like I was very quick to get tired, but otherwise had no issues... Friday we walked from our house to downtown for dinner at a Japanesse steakhouse where you grill the food your self (a total walk of about 1.5 miles).

As far as food goes, I have not been hungry... And interestingly enough this may be the first time in my life... Oh sure, I have been stuffed to the gills... unable to eat another bite, but never have I felt the way I have for the last 4 days... Generally satiated and not hungry...

Thursday I had 3 1/4 cup servings of egg substitute with 1/3 oz low fat cheese with 2 tbls spoon of salsa for breakfast. For lunch I had to be creative... I was at a customer site and went to the deli fully expecting to just get turkey meat... Instead I had them make me a dry turkey sandwich using lettuce leaves as the bread with tomatoes and pepperonis -- it was delicious... For dinner I had 3 1/4 cup servings of egg beaters with 1/3 oz low fat cheese with 2 tbls spoon of salsa. I drank tons of water throughout the day... The only downside, I had to get up during the middle of the night.

Thursday I had 3 1/4 cup servings of egg substitute with 1/3 oz low fat cheese with 2 tbls spoon of salsa for breakfast. For lunch I had a greek salad with chicken and no dressing... It had salad, cucumbers, onions, tomatoes, and a little feta cheese. I ate all the chicken, but left about 1/2 of the rest... For dinner we went to the Japanese steakhouse Juban Yakiniku whose tagline is the art of grilling... I had Tofu, Zucchini, Shrimp, Ribeye, and boneless short rib all grilled and without rice. I know it sounds like a lot and I was full after 1/2 of the order, but everything is in small portions... I still need to work on doing a better job ordering... I think I felt like I was hungry or maybe I just have to work on my dinning out under ordering skills. Again plenty of water throughout the day and again the downside of having to get up during the night.

Methionine, Inositol, and Choline (MIC) Injection

As part of the medically assisted weightloss program I receive a weekly injection of Methionine, Inositol, and Choline (MIC). Here is what the packet my doctor gave me has to say about them...

These lipotropic agents belong to a class of substances that play important roles in the body's use of fat. Of these substances methionine, inositol, and choline are among the mote noteworthy. Through their involvement in the lipid (fat) metabolism, lipotropics help maintain liver function and promote fat excretion.

Methionine

Methionine is a lipotropic amino acid which reduces fat and aids in the lowering of cholesterol. It also plays a vital upstream role in the synthesis of other amino acids needed by the body.

Inositol and Choline

Inositol and Choline are co-enzymes necessary for the prosper metabolism of fats. A deficiency in inositol has been shown to produce an accumulation of triglycerides in the liver. Inositol metabolizes fats and cholesterol and aids in their transport in blood vessels. It is therefore an aid in the redistribution of body fat and can help to lower cholesterol levels. Choline aids in emulsifying cholesterol. Choline also works well with methionine to detoxify amines which are the by-products of protein metabolism. Without choline, fats can become trapped in the liver, where they black normal metabolic functions.

I did a quick google search to see if there were any side effects or downsides and did not really find anything... Any body have a link I should read about this injection? Please leave a comment...

Tangentially, I made it through my 1st entire day on the diet. In order to jump start the weightloss for the 1st 2 days it is suggested to only eat protein... I ate 4 protien servings of egg substitute (1 cup total) and 4 protein servings of lean turkey (4oz), and 4 protein servings of skinless chicken breast (4oz) throughout the day in 6 distinct sessions. I was not hungry.

I did feel a bit random... That is to say I felt a little wired, but also a little unable to focus. Nothing debilitating... The doctor had warned that for the 1st week I might feel different than normal...

I also exercised... I rode the stationary bike for 20 minutes. I 1 set or 10 reps on bench press, fly, military press, and lat pull-down. I also did 50 crunches.
