As I previously mentioned I am back to paying attention to my diet and exercise program... But as I also mentioned I am still on vacation.
For Easter my family went to La Quinta Spa and Resort Easter brunch... All you can eat deliciousness. I had BBQ short ribs, bacon, an omelet, sushi, shrimp, crab, and flourless chocolate tort. Wow was it good. Yikes was I full.
If you are ever in Palm Springs at Easter I highly recommend it. If you are on a diet I highly recommend you avoid it.
Fat man unleashed tells us that Chinese Buffets and Fat Men Don’t Mix... WeightLadder tells you that ANY all-you-can-eat buffet is dangerous for a diet. Delicious as it might be.
After 2-3 hours of couch riding basketball watching digesting I decided I needed to exercise off some of the food I had eaten... Luckily my vacation house has a 54 foot lap pool. 50 laps later I was feeling a little better about myself.
Another 50 laps tomorrow morning and tomorrow afternoon combined with not eating the entire kitchen and I should be at least no worse for wear.

Let's face it, when it comes to starting an exercise plan, few of us actually enjoy it. Who wants to get all tired and sweaty when it's so much easier to sit on the couch and languish? This causes most of us to make excuses and find ways to keep busy so that we have a reason to avoid exercising. However, there are ways that you can get past this stage and make that effort towards getting healthier. And you know what? Once you start exercising regularly you'll most likely find that you feel better when you're done. That's right, eventually you will like exercising.
So, let's start off at ground zero. You need to exercise, but you don't want to. First, make a list of all the reasons that you need to start exercising. Now, next to this column, make a list of the reasons that you don't want to exercise. Let's take a look at that second column and start blowing these excuses away.
Biggest excuse - you don't have enough time.
Well, there are several ways to look at this. Most of us need to exercise at least thirty minutes a day. While it's better to get it done all at once, there's no rule that says you have to do thirty minutes in one sitting. Can you find three 10 minute blocks in your day where you usually do nothing? Turn that time into exercise time! It may not be easy if you're at work, but there are ways that you can start exercising even on the job.
Second biggest excuse - I'm embarrassed to go to the gym in my current state.
Yes, walking into the gym and being the biggest person there is not fun. However, chances are, those people looked just like you at one time or another. You don't need to feel ashamed of your body. If you find that you're not welcome at one gym, try another. If all else fails, get some exercise equipment for you home or start a walking plan around your neighborhood. Keep at it until you feel comfortable enough to walk into the gym.
Third biggest excuse - The gym is too far away.
This is one of the few excuses that actually makes a lot of sense. We're all pretty busy and driving that extra twenty minutes out of our way doesn't fit into our schedules. If you cannot find a gym that is within a short distance of your home or work, try to get some exercise equipment of your own, or find ways to exercise that don't require actual equipment, such as walking or running.
Fourth biggest excuse - I'm too out of shape and it's too hard.
Well, with this mentality, you're never going to get anywhere. Instead of leaping into a marathon training regime, you're going to need to start small. Build up your exercise in five minute blocks, adding more moves until you are able to do them all at once. This helps you gradually get into better shape and it's not so hard to get started.

While everyone talks about the Freshman 15 and acknowledges that it is a problem, not many books have been written on the subject. Enter Daphne Oz, the daughter of the famous cardiologist, popularized on Oprah. Oz has some great advice to share for those looking to either beat the Freshman 15 or prevent it from creeping up on them. While this is not an easy diet by any means, the book is easy to read and very informative.
Unlike many diet books, this one goes right into the importance of exercise and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Cardio and other training is recommended at least three times a week and we enjoyed the discussion on whether or not walking back and forth to classes is enough – hint – it’s not. It was very refreshing to get to a diet book that didn’t promise the moon just by sitting on the couch, and this definitely got the book numerous points in its favor.
The best part about the principles in this book is that they are simple and easy to follow. No calorie counting is required and the planner sheets make it very easy to stick to the diet. Our main complaints are that it doesn’t do much good for those that are subjected to unhealthy cafeteria food and have little option of eating healthy since their budget won’t allow it.
Beyond that point however, although this is a strict diet, once you get started, it should not be terribly hard to keep. It is written with busy students in mind, but many of these same techniques will work for busy housewives, executives, or anyone else that is crunched for time. It may not be the perfect diet book, but it is one of the best that has come around the bend in some time – and that is saying quite a lot.
School may have already started this year, but it is never too late to give the gift of health. If you know someone in college, or even someone that is having difficulty with their weight, this is an ideal book to give them, especially with the holidays approaching. It is not easy to get started in school and pay attention to what you’re eating, but this book and the planner that goes with it will certainly take a lot of stress off of the reader.
The principles promoted in this book are sound and provide the reader with pretty much everything they will need to stick to a diet plan and see it through. In fact, even if you don’t need to lose weight, this advice will certainly help you get healthier and stay there, and in very little time. It’s a bit strict in spots, but in a way, that works in the book’s favor. We enjoyed The Dorm Room Diet and we highly recommend it.
