Like what BetterBody said, what really great about swimming that it's fun, not boring and it works every single muscle in your body not to mention that it's great for the chest muscles as well. One of my friends who practice swimming since he was a kid has an impressive cheat muscles better than the rest of the Gym Guys! :)

This post is full of really valuable information. I have used swinmming as a means of exercise many of times and I was wondering if you were going to mention anything about the whole whirpool technique. That has always worked really well for me. One would think that after one or two laps of going the opposite way of the flow of water, the resistance would become weaker. But that is not the case. After getting the whirpool to start, it seems as though it last forever.I really feel like this is one of the best exercise techniques.

Swimming is definitely one of the best workouts out there. First off its fun, you never get bored of it. Second, its very cardio intensive, and it also works nearly every muscle in your body (depending on the type of swim you do)

Great post!

Swimming is definitely a great exercise. It works the whole body, and is very easy on the joints. I'm not sure how effective it is to lose weight if you are already overweight, however. The reasons for this are:
1) Fat floats. This makes swimming less of a workout than for those with little bodyfat.
2) Water is very effective at cooling your body down. This makes it more difficult to sweat and reach that optimum fat burning state.

To me, I suspect swimming is excellent to maintain whatever fitness level you are at. However, to lose weight, I'm not so sure. Has anyone out there lost a lot of weight by simply swimming? I'd be curious to know.
