Laying the Foundation For Your Child’s Future (Healthy Eating Habits)

One of the ways that you should be laying the foundation for your child's future is to teach healthy eating and exercise habits young, so that those concepts will carry on until adulthood, and help your children lead healthy, active lifestyles for optimum health and well being. It can be difficult for children to learn healthy eating habits. Even though fast food places offer healthy children's meals, they are still pushing the French fries, chicken nuggets with trans fat and other unhealthy choices under the guise of a more healthful solution. By teaching your children about what constitutes healthy eating in comparison to junk food and bad food eating, you are giving them a study foundation on which to build their own eating preferences and healthy choices as they grow up.

Here are some tips for laying the foundation for your child's future by teaching healthy eating habits and habits for good exercise.

- The earlier that you begin to instill healthy eating habits into your children, the better the results will be.

- Your children will grow accustomed to the foods that you feed them. If you let them grow accustomed to eating fast food for example, then it will be difficult to transition them into healthier eating habits, which means the earlier that you begin, the better off that you will.

- Teach your children portion control early and practice the concept often. If you put a giant plate of food in front of them over and over, they will never understand how much they really should be eating. By showing them what a real "portion" is early and exercising the concept often, it will be easier to help them understand how much is a healthy amount to eat and how much is too much.

- Share the benefits of healthy foods with your children but do not push the healthy options on them. When you push healthy foods onto your children, they will naturally reject your efforts. But if you teach them to understand why those foods are best, they will more readily accept them.

- Try to make the meals visually pleasing for your child as often as possible. Choose colorful foods, miniature foods and other fun foods to get them interested in what they are eating. Vegetables are colorful, fruits are colorful, and there are plenty of ways to turn them into visually pleasing meals that your children will enjoy.

- Make sure your child brings lunch to school. Lap top lunches in small plastic boxes are becoming popular, following the same basic idea as Japanese Bento. By building cute portable lunches for your children, you are teaching them healthy eating and portion control in a way that is friendly and flexible and supports their own eating habits and enjoyment.

Teaching your children to eat healthily is easy, and becomes easier when you start earlier rather than later.
