This is part 4 in a 4 part series about knowing how to read labels and excel at grocery shopping for the purpose of losing weight and getting yourself healthy in every way. Learning how to master grocery shopping is not difficult once you are aware of what to look for.
Shopping For – Juices and Drinks
- Recommended Brands – Crystal Light, Ocean Spray and Welch’s
Tips for Buying –
- When you are buying juices, make sure to look for the varieties that announce either no sugar or low sugar. “No sugar added” is also a good way to go because it means that no additional unnecessary sugar has been added to the juice drink.
- You should be attempting to avoid juices that feature high fructose corn syrups, especially when the juice lists it as one of the first few ingredients.
- Even if it is a natural sugar from fruit juice, too much sugar is always capable of being fattening. The best types of fruit juices are those that feature 10 grams worth of sugar or less, and always opt for less when possible.
- You should try to limit your overall intake of sugar to 22 grams of sugar or less per day.
Shopping For – Tea
- Recommended Brands – Celestial Seasonings, Lipton and Good Earth
Tips for Buying –
- Tea is a drink that is naturally quite high in antioxidants, and that makes it excellent for aiding in weight loss and fighting inflammation.
- If you want to get the full benefits of drinking tea, then you should drink between 3 and 4 glasses per day.
- If you want to add sweetness to your tea, try using honey rather than sugar varieties.
- You should allow your tea to steep for between 3 and 5 minutes in order to bring out the full benefit of the catechins.
Shopping For – Crackers
- Recommended Brands – RyKrisp, Health Valley, Ryvita, Nabisco Low-Sodium varieties, Aunt Gussie’s
Tips for Buying –
- You should be watching the sodium count for the crackers that you buy, and always aim to buy low sodium varieties or no sodium varieties whenever possible.
- Crackers contain whole grains are the best varieties of crackers for you to purchase.
- You should be looking to purchase crackers that provide you with 2 grams worth of fiber or more with every serving.
Shopping For – Energy Bars
- Recommended Brands – Kashi, Luna and SoyJoy
Buying Tips –
- Most energy bars unfortunately contain entirely too much sugar. You should be looking for bars that contain less than a total of 12 grams of sugar per serving.
- You should be trying to keep the calorie count for your energy bars below 150 calories.
- You should aim to buy energy bars featuring less than 125 mg of sodium.
- Another thing that you need to watch out for is fat, aiming to purchase energy bars with 5 grams of fat or less.
