This is part 2 in a 4 part series about knowing how to read labels and excel at grocery shopping for the purpose of losing weight and getting yourself healthy in every way. Learning how to master grocery shopping is not difficult once you are aware of what to look for.
Shopping For - Meats
Tips for Buying –
- You should be choosing Select beef cuts, as they are leaner in comparison to Choice beef cuts. You may have to specifically approach the butcher in your local grocer in order to determine which varieties are Select rather than Choice, to make sure that you walk away with the leanest possible cut of meat.
- When you are buying pork, you should be looking for loin cuts or round cuts. These cuts are the leanest cuts of pork that you can purchase.
- Any time you are purchasing meat from the supermarket or grocer, you should be looking for meat varieties that have already had most of their fat cut off. This is going to significantly impact the fat and calories that you consume simply because you are choosing leaner cuts.
- If you want to know how you can prepare different cuts of meat without adding a significant amount of fat to the meal, then you should be looking for recipes that involve grilling the meat, broiling the meat, baking the meat or roasting the meat for the best possible results.
- In recipes that call for ground beef, you can easily substitute in ground turkey and get the same results for a lot less calories and fat. Ground turkey works well in everything from tacos and lasagnas to casseroles and even Hamburger Helper, and when seasoned properly, you cannot tell the difference between the two despite the differences in healthiness.
Shopping For - Fruits
Tips for Buying –
- Most berry fruits come packed full of a lot of vitamin C as well as antioxidants, and they are considered by many people to be some of the healthiest fruits that you can consume.
- Even though the sugars contained within fruits are healthy and natural sugars, you still need to watch your intake of these sugars, because they can impact you much in the same way as other sugars.
- If you are looking for a delicious and healthy snack that you can make quickly in your home, try making a fruit smoothie that combines your favorite fresh fruit varieties with whey protein and honey.
- Although all fruits are healthy in their own right, some fruits are considered to be healthier than others. The healthiest fruits, in no real particular order, include apples, bananas, blueberries, oranges, grapefruits, strawberries, prunes, cherries, raspberries and blackberries.
