Exercising at Night Safely

atnightBecause of busy schedules, time constraints and other issues, many people are not able to find time to squeeze in their workout routines until late at night. Unfortunately, there are new threats to safety that have to be considered when it comes to working out at night. It is vitally important that you know how to be safe and protected when you are working out at night. Here is a guide to safely exercising at night, and some of the precautions that you can take to make sure that you are always safe no matter when you are working out, day or night.

- * Staying safe at night is going to require some forethought and planning, so make sure that you plan your route ahead of time and that you let someone know where you are going to go. Make sure that you have a cell phone with you at all times. It is also important that you be aware of local public telephones just in case.

- * Make sure that you always carry identification with you.
You should always have an ID tag or a driver's license with you at all times. At the very least, make sure that your personal information is printed inside your shoe or you have a business card in your pocket so that you can be identified if need be.

- * Do not carry money or jewelry, reducing your risk of being targeted as a victim for a robbery.

- * Dress in a way that will allow you to be seen. Wear materials that are bright and reflective so that you can be properly seen by drivers. Make sure that your running shoes are also reflective to make sure that your visibility is increased. There are other reflective prints that you can buy as well including reflecting pants, jackets, shorts and even vests. You should also carry a blinking or flashing device or a flash light so you can be seen by all.

- * Never exercise alone if you can help it, because there is always safety in numbers. Make sure that you are always exercising with somebody else, even if it is just your dog.

- * Make sure that you are constantly staying alert. If you end up lost in your own thoughts or distracted, you will be much more vulnerable because you will not be paying attention to your surroundings as much as you need to.

- * Try to avoid wearing headphones, because music can restrict your ability to hear, distracting you from what is going on around you in your environment. If you wear headphones, you may not notice an oncoming car or a potential attacker. You need to be able to listen to your surroundings and to learn what sounds are perfectly normal and what sounds need to be avoided.

These tips will keep you safer when you are out exercising at night.
