39 Pounds in 5 Weeks

After 5 weeks on the medically assisted weightless program I have lost 39 pounds… This week I lost 5 pounds which is incredible (the results of this diet and program are remarkable and fast.) 5 pounds was 77% of my weekly goal of 6.5 pounds per week. This week even though I lost 5 pounds I had trouble with portion control at the evening meal… This is been slowly building over the 5 weeks, but this week I asked my doctor if we could increase the Phentermine dose. So for this week I am on 37.5 mg (instead of 30 mg) of Phentermine.

I attribute missing the goal for the same reason as missing last week’s goal… a later than normal and larger than normal (for a 1200 calorie diet) dinner last night and missing my regular movement this morning. I except that there are normal fluctuations in the weekly number as even on a daily basis I can fluctuate 5 pounds from morning through evening with the ups and downs of water loss and water consumption with the Ketosis and exercise.

Here is a graph of my weight loss (if you are reading this in the future this graph will have updated for future weigh ins as well)… Clicking the image will open to a larger image.
weight loss chart

So if I am to believe my claim that 1.5 pounds is within a normal fluctuation and that I am still maintaining a 5 pound a week average weight loss (from missing my goal last weigh in.) Then I need to set my weekly goal for 5 pounds plus the pound and a half that the scale failed to recognize lost in previous weeks. So my goal for next week is to end the week at 345 or to have lost 6.5 pounds for the week.

I played 2 hours of basketball twice and 2 hours of volleyball twice and went of several walks and played 9 holes of golf at Harding Park Golf Club. I did not get a chance to swim… My plan is about the same for this week, only with more swimming.

I was able to drastically reduce my fat free cheese intake and plan to continue with more lean meats instead… I feel more satiated and frankly they taste better too. I ran out of sugar free Metamucil (non water soluble) and switched to benefiber (water soluble). If Metamucil is an orange cream shake, benefiber is like dirty water (in plain water) and noticeable but ignorable in crystal light. I plan on switching back as soon as my current container is used.

Healthy, Happy, Wealthy, and Wise

I have been tagged by Fat Man Unleashed to write a 6 word memoir. His was Be About It!

My 5 word memoir is Healthy, Happy, Wealthy, and Wise.

At the end of the day, this is how I will remember my life.

  • Healthy — this one is pretty self explanatory, but it does require work to get there from here. I am currently perfectly healthy, however I know that without choosing to lose weight and exercise regularly NOW that will not always be the case. It will be the case and I am committed to losing the weight and maintaining the healthy lifestyle. I have had a wonderful first 30 some odd years and I intend to have another healthy 100 or so in front of me.
  • Happy — I have met the woman of my dreams, I have a wonderful child, I played basketball in college, I am good at and enjoy my job, enjoying every minute, doing what I enjoy, experiencing the best things in life, fulfilled.
  • Wealthy — In spirit and eventually monetarily. Content. Wanting for nothing.
  • Wise — At least in my own mind.

And now it is my turn to tag a few people to write their own 6 word memior

Weigh In #4 — One Month and 34 Pounds Lost

After 1 month on the Jumpstart Medicine medically assisted weightless program I have lost 34 pounds… This week I lost 3.5 pounds with was 70% of my weekly goal of 5 pounds per week. I attribute missing the goal to a later than normal and larger than normal (for a 1200 calorie diet) dinner last night and missing my regular movement this morning.

So if I am to believe my claim that 1.5 pounds is within a normal fluctuation and that I am still maintaining a 5 pound a week average weight loss. Then I need to set my weekly goal for 5 pounds plus the pound and a half that the scale failed to recognize lost in the weigh in. So my goal for next week is to end the week at 350 or to have lost 6.5 pounds for the week.

My plan to accomplish the goal is to stick to the diet, reduce my fat free cheese intake and replace those proteins with more lean meat. My plan to address the lack of a normal movement is to continue to consume a 2 regular servings of sugar free Metamucil.

I had a good week for an exercise perspective… I played almost 2 hours of basketball twice and almost 2 hours of volleyball twice. I went for a short swim and several walks. My plan is about the same for this week, only with more swimming.

In talking with the doctor about my long term goal, he was hesitant to talk about a final weight number. Instead he focused on Body Fat percentage. At this week’s weigh in we did the electroanalysis again and my body fat percentage was 36% (down from 39% when I started). He thought he first goal is to get the BFP below 25% and ideally below 20%. At that point my actual weight is irrelevant. So, even though I have a number in mind for my final weight (230-260), I am now officially making it my goal to get to under a 20% body fat percentage. If I can continue to lose 5 pounds a week I should be able to reach my goal by the end of the year.

Phentermine

With the program that I am on, I am currently taking Phentermine HCl 30mg. With this post I wanted to share what my doctors says about this drug… The page in my program is taking about 2 drugs at the same time Phendimetrazine and Phentermine. I am currently only on Phentermine and have little or very mild side effects.

Phendimetrazine and Phentermine are sympathomimetic amine. They work by affecting appetite control centers in teh brain. They promote weight loss by convincing the body that it is not hungry. They decrease appetite by increasing serotonin or catecholamine — two neurotransmitters that affect mood and appetite. Phendimetrazine and Phentermine are used as a short-term supplements to diet and exercise in the treatment of obesity.

You should take these medications one hour before a meal on an empty stomach. Take with one glass of water. Do not take them in the evening becasue they may cause insomnia.

You shoud not take this medicine if you have:

  • Severe heart disease
  • Severe high blood pressure
  • Glaucoma
  • Allergy to this medication
  • Recent history of drug abuse
  • Recent MAOI use (isocarboxazid (Marplan), tranylcypromine (Parnate), or phenelzine (Nardil), Harnaline, Iproclozide, Nialamide, Selegiline, Tolaxatone in the the last 14 days.)

You may not be able to take these medications, or you may require a lower dose or special monitoring during treatment if you have any of the conditions listed below:

  • Seizure disorder
  • Untreated thyroid disorder

Phendimetrazine and Phentermine, like all medications, may cause side effects. In studies the most common side effects were:

  • Restlessness
  • Nervousness or anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Dry mouth or an unpleasant taste in you mouth
  • Diarrhea or constipation

Other side effect that may occur include:

  • Headache or dizziness
  • Changes in libido
  • Blurred vision
  • Stomach upset

These side effect are generally mild and have usually not caused people to stop taking their medication. If you develop a symptom that you think might be a side effect, stop taking the medication and notify your doctor so that he or she can advise you on what to do.

And if you still want to read more consider reading what wikipedia has to say on Phentermine.

Methionine, Inositol, and Choline (MIC) Injection

As part of the medically assisted weightloss program I receive a weekly injection of Methionine, Inositol, and Choline (MIC). Here is what the packet my doctor gave me has to say about them…

These lipotropic agents belong to a class of substances that play important roles in the body’s use of fat. Of these substances methionine, inositol, and choline are among the mote noteworthy. Through their involvement in the lipid (fat) metabolism, lipotropics help maintain liver function and promote fat excretion.

Methionine

Methionine is a lipotropic amino acid which reduces fat and aids in the lowering of cholesterol. It also plays a vital upstream role in the synthesis of other amino acids needed by the body.

Inositol and Choline

Inositol and Choline are co-enzymes necessary for the prosper metabolism of fats. A deficiency in inositol has been shown to produce an accumulation of triglycerides in the liver. Inositol metabolizes fats and cholesterol and aids in their transport in blood vessels. It is therefore an aid in the redistribution of body fat and can help to lower cholesterol levels. Choline aids in emulsifying cholesterol. Choline also works well with methionine to detoxify amines which are the by-products of protein metabolism. Without choline, fats can become trapped in the liver, where they black normal metabolic functions.

I did a quick google search to see if there were any side effects or downsides and did not really find anything… Any body have a link I should read about this injection? Please leave a comment…

Tangentially, I made it through my 1st entire day on the diet. In order to jump start the weightloss for the 1st 2 days it is suggested to only eat protein… I ate 4 protien servings of egg substitute (1 cup total) and 4 protein servings of lean turkey (4oz), and 4 protein servings of skinless chicken breast (4oz) throughout the day in 6 distinct sessions. I was not hungry.

I did feel a bit random… That is to say I felt a little wired, but also a little unable to focus. Nothing debilitating… The doctor had warned that for the 1st week I might feel different than normal…

I also exercised… I rode the stationary bike for 20 minutes. I 1 set or 10 reps on bench press, fly, military press, and lat pull-down. I also did 50 crunches.

WeightLadder Reset — 390lbs and Starting Medically Assisted Weightloss

Well nothing like tax day to make you take the plunge… Recently I bid on and “won” the first month of a medically supervised weightloss program called Jumpstart Medicine with Dr Sean Bourke. It turns out that I did receive a substantial discount by purchasing through the charity auction. I am committed to this medical food based program until I reach my goal weight. This time will be different. This time I have help.

Anyway, today was my first appointment and it represents new beginnings for this blog… I intend to follow my journey through this medically assisted weight loss program and into a completely new healthy lifestyle…

First of all here is the bad news… I was up to 390.41 lbs with a Body Mass Index of 40.8 (normal is 18.5-25) and a Percent Body Fat of 39.0% (normal is 10-20). Clearly I am currently obese.

They had a fancy scale that provided a variety of various other statistics and perhaps I will look into writing about them as I figure out what they mean.

I will go into far more details in the coming posts, but to start here is the basics…

Weekly doctor visits until goal weight reached.

The Diet: ~1200 calories that breaks down very much like weight watchers only with fewer carbs. For 1 day, I get 14 proteins (~1oz lean/very lean protein, 6 carbs (vegetables and fruit, plain salad is unlimited), 1 dairy, 120 oz of water.

The Exercise: At least 60 minutes of rigorous walking 5-7 days a week. Don’t overdue the exercise (no marathons) until the effects of the medicine and the diet have stabilized. 9 holes of golf walking and carrying my bag counts. !!!

The Medicine: Weekly MIC Injection (Methionine, Inositol, and Choline), daily Phentermine, daily Chromium, daily Multivitamin, and optional weekly B12 shots. There are 2 other medicines for women which I will not be taken: Calcium and B6.
