One of the simplest possible ways that you can look at weight loss is on a calories in and calories out basis. What this means is that you need to burn as many calories as you are consuming in order to maintain your weight, or burn more than you are consuming in order to lose weight. A lb of body weight is said to consist of 3,500 calories. For every 3,500 calories that you burn rather than consuming, you will lose 1 lb of body weight. It really is this simple when you look at it, but that does not mean that practicing this way of thinking is easy.
So, first and foremost you are going to want to consume fewer calories. You can do this by choosing foods that are lower in calories and that are less calorie-dense. You can also do this by avoiding extras that are high in calories. You should also avoid drinking your calories. Stick to water, and skip sodas and juices. You also are going to want to exercise portion control by cutting your serving size in half or simply avoiding consuming seconds.
You are also going to want to track your intake of food using a system that is convenient as well as simple for you to use. The more that you get a feel for how you are using calories, the less you will have to focus on tracking everything you eat.
Next, you are going to want to increase your calories out by exercising more than you currently are. You should be exercising for at least three days every week, but exercising more than this is always better. You are going to want to try to do the things that you enjoy, because you are much more likely to keep up with something you enjoy than something that you do not. You should also strive to make your exercise regimen as convenient as it can possibly be in order to make sure that you continue doing it and do not make excuses to stop.
Little activities can really add up. Take the stairs rather than riding in the elevator. Park further away from your office and enjoy the extra little walk. Spend more time moving rather than sitting and you will burn more calories than your body is used to - And this is the key to "calories in, calories out". Even if you eat normally and simply change your workout routine, you are going to notice a difference because you will be exercising more than before, and every calorie you burn beyond the ones you eat is going to be contributed to that magic 3,500 that leads to a pound of weight loss.
