Healthful eating habits are most commonly formed long before kids are even able to choose their own foods. Little ones can adopt the same eating habits that their parents exhibit. Parents and child care providers alike are the first role models that children will ever encounter when it comes to healthy eating. Children make awesome observers, so when they see what is happening in the kitchen, they can create a complete dialogue on the same things that are happening in the kitchen, but in their own little world with their invisible friends, for example. In several studies relating to the eating patterns that children follow, researchers found that preferences for certain foods and other eating habits were traced to the patterns and the preferences that their parents and other adult role models exhibited.

As kids move from bottles to solid foods, they begin to develop their eating habits, and these are the habits that follow them throughout their lives. Healthy eating habits that begin at an early age will continue to follow these children through to adulthood. Since it is documented that eating healthfully can prevent illness, it is vital that the role models for these children begin to offer apples, carrots and other healthy treats in place of sugar laden treats like candy and chocolate. Little ones are going to eat the things that they see their parents eating, so it is vital that you act accordingly, exhibiting healthy eating habits so that your children may follow along.

Parents are not always aware of the fact that they are such a major influence on their children and what they learn to eat. Research has shown that the attitude about food that children develop is nearly as genetic as their eye color, which can put a lot of stress on the parents. But if you understand the true implications behind a scientific study like this, then you will be able to raise healthier and happier children in the long run. A healthier parent means healthier children, hands down.

Teaching your children healthy eating habits is not as difficult as you might imagine. It begins by you exhibiting healthy eating habits of your own, which is something that your children can pick up on. As your children watch you eat healthfully, they will want to do the same. Keep unhealthy foods out of the house, and your children will never pick up on eating these foods. Eating bad food is a habit just as eating good food is a habit, so replace bad dietary choices with healthy choices and your children will learn how to be healthy and smart in their food choices. As your children get old enough to make their own choices, teach them about nutritional labels and how to determine which foods are the best to eat and which are not. You will never have complete control over your child's eating habits, especially as he or she ages, but the more you teach and influence while they are young, the more lasting influence you will have in the future when it truly matters.

One of the ways that you should be laying the foundation for your child's future is to teach healthy eating and exercise habits young, so that those concepts will carry on until adulthood, and help your children lead healthy, active lifestyles for optimum health and well being. It can be difficult for children to learn healthy eating habits. Even though fast food places offer healthy children's meals, they are still pushing the French fries, chicken nuggets with trans fat and other unhealthy choices under the guise of a more healthful solution. By teaching your children about what constitutes healthy eating in comparison to junk food and bad food eating, you are giving them a study foundation on which to build their own eating preferences and healthy choices as they grow up.

Here are some tips for laying the foundation for your child's future by teaching healthy eating habits and habits for good exercise.

- The earlier that you begin to instill healthy eating habits into your children, the better the results will be.

- Your children will grow accustomed to the foods that you feed them. If you let them grow accustomed to eating fast food for example, then it will be difficult to transition them into healthier eating habits, which means the earlier that you begin, the better off that you will.

- Teach your children portion control early and practice the concept often. If you put a giant plate of food in front of them over and over, they will never understand how much they really should be eating. By showing them what a real "portion" is early and exercising the concept often, it will be easier to help them understand how much is a healthy amount to eat and how much is too much.

- Share the benefits of healthy foods with your children but do not push the healthy options on them. When you push healthy foods onto your children, they will naturally reject your efforts. But if you teach them to understand why those foods are best, they will more readily accept them.

- Try to make the meals visually pleasing for your child as often as possible. Choose colorful foods, miniature foods and other fun foods to get them interested in what they are eating. Vegetables are colorful, fruits are colorful, and there are plenty of ways to turn them into visually pleasing meals that your children will enjoy.

- Make sure your child brings lunch to school. Lap top lunches in small plastic boxes are becoming popular, following the same basic idea as Japanese Bento. By building cute portable lunches for your children, you are teaching them healthy eating and portion control in a way that is friendly and flexible and supports their own eating habits and enjoyment.

Teaching your children to eat healthily is easy, and becomes easier when you start earlier rather than later.

If you have a child that is dealing with weight issues and you find yourself nagging him or her to lose weight, then you may not realize that nagging is not the best way to help them lose weight. You can actually run the risk of straining your relationship with your child. However, as a parent of an overweight child, it is your duty to help them lose weight and develop healthy eating and exercise habits, which means learning how to help your child in the best possible way. Correcting the diet habits of your children can become increasingly harder as they age, especially as they become increasingly aware of bad foods like McDonalds and other fast food choices. For this reason, you should aim to help your child lose weight early, and let them grow up with healthy food and exercise habits so that they can make smart decisions as they grow up.

- Avoid pushing new diets on your child.

Rather teach them the basics of good nutrition and exercise, so that he or she has the necessary tools to make the right decisions. Your children are old enough to make the right decisions, and you need to facilitate that rather than simply forcing it on your child. Diets may seem like the answer at first, but it is much more useful to teach them correct eating and good nutrition so you can be a good role model rather than the person that forced a diet on him or her.

- Avoid forcing exercise on your child.

Find ways instead to get your child more active without stressing him or her out. There are plenty of ways to exercise that are fun. Get your child involved in a sport or an after school activity. Even games like "Dance Dance Revolution" and "Deca Sports" are excellent for getting your child more active if he or she is sedentary for most of the day. Buy your child a skateboard, roller skates, a bicycle, or some other tool that they can use to enjoy exercise on their own terms and never ever force physical activity on them if you do not want the exercise idea to be completely rejected.

- Avoid projecting your feelings onto your child.

You may have had body issues as a child, but you do not need to project this onto your child, who is probably already dealing with issues. You do not want to create self image problems in your child if you can help it. Let your child develop his or her own self image rather than forcing your self image issues onto him or her.

- Praise your child for weight loss, but only sparingly.

You do not want your child to feel pressured into weight loss, you are going to want it to be healthy and proactive. Your children may be over weight, but they need to learn about healthy weight loss, not unhealthy weight loss for the sake of pleasing you, or avoiding negative comments.
