Many of us go to a doctor for our annual exam only to be told that we have a fatty liver. For the vast majority this is a pretty confusing diagnosis and it's hard to know what we can do to fix it. First, let's find out what a fatty liver is and then find out how to change it.

Normally, a fat liver is associated with drinking. However, a lifetime of unhealthy eating can do almost the same amount of damage to your liver. Over time, fat deposits collect in your liver and it starts to affect the overall function of that organ. We all need our livers and it's not really easy to get a transplant, so it's important to make that change towards getting healthy as soon as you find out that you have this problem.

A fatty liver can lead to numerous other health problems and in many cases, it's associated with adult-onset diabetes. There are plenty of other diseases that can result from having a fatty liver and the decreased function you're experiencing will begin to affect your total body health. There is also a second form of fatty liver disease that is far more serious and can actually be fatal.

So, know that we know what causes a fatty liver and why we don't want one, let's focus on ways to get rid of those fat deposits and get healthy. While there is no diet that will spot target your liver, there are proven ways of losing weight that will help you reduce the amount of fat in your liver and get healthy again. The good news is that you can undo that damage, but you will have to make a commitment towards your future.

The first step you need to take is modifying your lifestyle and targeting the foods that you're eating that are leading to the problem. For many people, cutting fast foods and high sugar foods out of their diet is the fastest way to get rid of fat deposits in the liver. But you're also going to need to add some activity if you really want to burn fat. The more calories you burn, the faster you'll get going on the road to health.

Cardio is by far the best way to burn fat from your body. You'll be getting your heart rate into that target zone so that your body can begin burning calories. If you're not reaching that target heart rate, all that effort is pretty much for naught. You'll need to get there and keep going in order to get any real benefit from your exercises.

The proper diet, combined with cardio is the quickest and most effective way to combat a fatty liver. It may take a few months, but you will start to see results and you will be getting healthier. Just remember, once you reach that goal, you've got to keep going. Changing your life requires smart decisions, healthy eating choices and plenty of exercise.

When it comes to the trio of protein, fat and carbs, most people tend to focus on the last two. They are demonized, championed, reviled – you name it. But in this mess, protein is usually forgotten, or lumped into a category where it doesn’t belong. Protein is vital, especially if it is the right kind of protein. In fact, the right kind of protein can actually aid you in your weight loss efforts.

Body builders are probably the ones that are best informed about protein. They eat it in large amounts, especially after exercising and they know the value that it brings to their efforts to build muscles. What the average dieter may not know is that protein not only builds up lean muscle mass, but by doing so, it can help increase your metabolism. When you couple that with a plan for exercise and healthy eating, you are setting yourself up for success.

The key is finding the right kind of protein. The majority of Americans get their protein from red meat sources – and these are the same foods that contain a high amount of cholesterol. However, there are many other sources of protein that are quite good for you, and in fact, some of these can even help you prevent disease. When you are looking for the right kind of protein to eat, it is important to focus on these sources, especially the ones that are rich in Omega 3 Fatty Acids.

These proteins are found in fish, lean chicken and even in soy. Consult with your doctor or a qualified nutritionist to see what types of protein you can safely eat and learn more about the different varieties that are available. You can easily start adding these foods in to your diet slowly. For example, you can eat salmon once a week, or try having tuna fish (canned in water only) for lunch instead of a hamburger.

The more you begin to replace bad foods with high quality protein, the more effective your weight loss efforts will be. Protein is especially helpful as a mid-day snack, and can provide the fuel you need to get through a tough day and make it until dinner. Low fat cottage cheese is a wonderful source of quality protein, and you can also find good proteins in soy nuts, and other fun snack food.

Try to stay away from pre-packaged protein bars, unless you carefully read the label. Many of these bars are laden with fat and carbohydrates and even though they may claim to be healthy, you may be stepping backwards instead of forwards in your weight loss efforts by eating them.

The right balance of protein will help you build up lean muscle mass, especially if you are exercising regularly. Try adding a few of these protein sources to your diet this week and see how much better you feel. Chances are, you’ll want to keep going and your body will definitely thank you.

When you're trying to lose weight, it is all so easy to fall into the trap of thinking that deprivation is the only way to go. There are some foods that your body really needs, even if you are on a diet. In addition, there are foods that your body "thinks" it needs, and by failing to address these problems, you can doom your diet to failure once your cravings start.

The key to successful and healthy weight loss is to first identify the foods that you simply cannot do without as well as the foods that your body really needs. You'll need to begin a program of retraining your body to accept the new foods and replace your bad habits with healthier ones. This should not be a process that happens overnight. By gradually removing and introducing foods you can make sure that you'll be successful.

The second key is making sure that you're getting the right percentage of foods in your diet. While many people turn to the food pyramid for their guidance, this is not always the best method. It is best to check with your doctor or schedule a visit with a nutritionist that can guide you on the proper percentages of foods that your body needs.

This equation usually takes the form of Proteins/Fats/Carbs. In order to maintain healthy body function, you need the right balance of these elements. You can also reduce the amount of cravings you have by keeping to this balance. Most people prefer to go for a 30/30/40 plan, but each person is different. Some of us need more protein, while others may need more carbs.

Once you get the percentage down, you'll need to find healthy foods that meet your requirements. For example, instead of relying on potatoes for your carbs, you can eat fresh fruit or vegetables. Instead of fatty cuts of meat for your protein allotment, switch to lean chicken or fish. You'll be able to eat a more balanced meal that will not leave you feeling deprived.

For fats, it is important to make sure you are using so-called "healthy" fats. These include olive oil, soy oil or even nuts. Switch out butter with olive oil and avoid saturated fats as much as possible. Everyone needs fat in their diets, but they need to make sure they are using healthy fats.

Now, let's go back to the first point, substitution of your favorite foods. This can be a little tough at first, but once your body gets used to it, you'll find that you actually prefer the new foods to the old ones. Let's look at ice cream as an example. Instead of indulging your sweet tooth in a pint of ice cream, allow yourself one serving of frozen yogurt. It's much lower in calories and fat, and there are many different flavors that will make it seem as though you're eating the real thing so that you don't feel deprived.

Most of us have at least one spot on our bodies that we would like to change. Commonly referred to as “problem areas,” if you are serious about making a change, you’ve got to find a way to target that area. While full body exercise is vital, there are many benefits to spending a few extra minutes targeting your problem areas to get better results. Here are some great tips on how to easily turn those problem areas into your pride and joy.

Stomachs –

For many people this is a big problem. The prevalence of “six pack abs” in the media is difficult for many people to get around. To start targeting this area, it is important to reduce your fat intake and get more cardio exercise. While crunches will build up your muscles, if you are not first losing the fat that covers them you won’t be able to see the results of your effort. For women, it is also important to realize that it may not be physically possible to have a completely flat stomach. Just try your best and don’t let the media dictate how flat your stomach should be.

Arms –

This is actually a pretty easy area to target and since most people don’t have a lot of fat build up on their arms, you can see results pretty quickly. In addition to your regular cardio or aerobic routine, add in a little strength or resistance training. This can dramatically produce results in a few short weeks, especially if you keep with it. For women, strength training has many benefits, and contrary to popular belief, a little light training will not make you look like a body builder.

Hips and Thighs –

For many women this is a big problem area and while it is possible to reduce this area, it is important to realize that your frame and genetics may impact just how small you can get. Focus on getting toned first, and keep up with the cardio and other fat burning exercises. You will see results, and over time, this area will get smaller if you can stick with it.

Rear Ends –

By far, the best way to tone up a rear end are squats and lunges. However, you’ve also got to burn fat in order to see those results, much like with your stomach. Focus on adding a few squats to your regular exercise routine, but don’t ditch your cardio. You need to keep burning fat in order to get big results on your rear end. Stairmasters are also another great solution for firming up your rear, and simply taking the stairs at work can also have a big impact.

Remember, no matter how bad your problem area may be, you can’t let that physical real estate keep you from living your life. Focus on your good points and work towards getting fit. The rest will naturally fall into place if you keep with your lifestyle and exercise changes.

If you've ever tried reading a food label, chances are it's tough to get through all of the different amounts, crazy names and percentages. However, there is an easy way to read those labels to get exactly the information that you need to know in a lot less time. By targeting those labels you'll know right off the bat if it's something that will be beneficial for your diet, or might sabotage it.

The calorie count is probably the first thing that you should look at, since it is the most important. You'll need to keep track of how many calories you're eating every day to stay under your required amount. If the calories are too high, see if there is something you can replace that will keep you under your limit. Just remember to write everything down so that you can keep track.

The second most important piece of information on the label is the amount of fat contained in it. Most Americans eat more than 60 grams of fat a day, and that is usually considered to be too much. While on a diet, it's a good idea to keep your fat grams to around 30 per day. Log this information and if the fat content seems too high, find an alternative.

Next up is sodium, and this is an area that many people don't pay enough attention to. The average requirement for daily sodium intake is around 2400 mg. Unfortunately, most people eat way more than that. Always look at the sodium content to make sure that you're staying under your required amount. The foods to look out for in this area are ramen noodles, canned soups and vegetables as well as prepackaged lunch meat. Too much sodium can lead to high blood pressure as well as water retention.

You'll also want to look at the amount of carbs in a serving. Once again, most of eat far too many carbs. Think of carbs as sugar - one teaspoon of sugar usually equals about 4 carbs. That means one can of soda can have more than 8 teaspoons of sugar in it. If that seems like a lot (it is) this will give you a better appreciation of how much sugar you are really eating.

The last thing to look at on a label are the ingredients. One common ingredient contained in canned foods is monosodium glutamate. Many people believe that this is responsible for excess weight gain and if you are sensitive to it, you can end up with a migraine headache. While the studies are still out about the harm that monosodium glutamate or MSG as it is commonly known, it is best to avoid it. Yeast extract and autolyzed yeast also contain MSG, so watch out for those names as well.

Reading labels doesn't have to be hard. With this system, you can tell with a simple glimpse whether or not you should be eating that food. With practice, you'll be zipping along.
