Many of us go to a doctor for our annual exam only to be told that we have a fatty liver. For the vast majority this is a pretty confusing diagnosis and it's hard to know what we can do to fix it. First, let's find out what a fatty liver is and then find out how to change it.

Normally, a fat liver is associated with drinking. However, a lifetime of unhealthy eating can do almost the same amount of damage to your liver. Over time, fat deposits collect in your liver and it starts to affect the overall function of that organ. We all need our livers and it's not really easy to get a transplant, so it's important to make that change towards getting healthy as soon as you find out that you have this problem.

A fatty liver can lead to numerous other health problems and in many cases, it's associated with adult-onset diabetes. There are plenty of other diseases that can result from having a fatty liver and the decreased function you're experiencing will begin to affect your total body health. There is also a second form of fatty liver disease that is far more serious and can actually be fatal.

So, know that we know what causes a fatty liver and why we don't want one, let's focus on ways to get rid of those fat deposits and get healthy. While there is no diet that will spot target your liver, there are proven ways of losing weight that will help you reduce the amount of fat in your liver and get healthy again. The good news is that you can undo that damage, but you will have to make a commitment towards your future.

The first step you need to take is modifying your lifestyle and targeting the foods that you're eating that are leading to the problem. For many people, cutting fast foods and high sugar foods out of their diet is the fastest way to get rid of fat deposits in the liver. But you're also going to need to add some activity if you really want to burn fat. The more calories you burn, the faster you'll get going on the road to health.

Cardio is by far the best way to burn fat from your body. You'll be getting your heart rate into that target zone so that your body can begin burning calories. If you're not reaching that target heart rate, all that effort is pretty much for naught. You'll need to get there and keep going in order to get any real benefit from your exercises.

The proper diet, combined with cardio is the quickest and most effective way to combat a fatty liver. It may take a few months, but you will start to see results and you will be getting healthier. Just remember, once you reach that goal, you've got to keep going. Changing your life requires smart decisions, healthy eating choices and plenty of exercise.

We’ve all been conditioned to think that unless we “feel the burn” we’re not working hard enough when we exercise. However, there is a fine line between reaching that optimum fat burning zone and over doing it. Here are some tips to help you figure out when your exercise is hurting instead of helping you.

1. You feel pulling or popping.

This is not good! You want to feel a slow, fluid stretch and pulling should not be involved. If you feel or hear popping, this is also not a good thing. Stop what you are doing and slowly stretch while you cool down. This will help prevent any further injury. If you are in too much pain, you may need to seek some physical therapy to undo the damage.

2. You feel acute pain.

There is a big difference between “the burn” and physical pain. If you are seconds from crying out, or in actual real, physical pain, you are not doing the exercise correctly, or you are attempting to do too much. Stop, and once again, stretch out the problem area. If you are injured, seek help immediately.

3. Breathing is nearly impossible.

It’s one thing to breath hard after an exercise, it’s another to start gasping, or worse, vomiting. While this can be a normal reaction for someone that is not fit, it is not a good one. This means that you have overexerted yourself. Cool down properly and try to take nice deep breaths. It may take a few minutes to return to normal.

4. You feel dizzy or your heart feels like it is pounding out of your chest.

This is a sign that you have gone past the point of burning fat and entered your zone of “too much.” Start walking slowly and take deep breaths. If you are too dizzy to move, sit in a quiet spot but do not put your head between your knees. Have some water and drink it slowly. If your heart rate does not come down, you may need to get some help.

5. You cannot move the next day.

Being a little stiff and sore is one thing. Being crippled is another. While you’re not going to be able to go through your first few workouts without a little after workout soreness, you should not be in serious physical pain. This means that you did too much and took your muscles too far. Try soaking in a bath and avoid exercise for a day.

6. You have an actual injury.

This is the most obvious sign that you went too far. Whether it is a pulled muscle, or a broken bone, you need to make sure that you are not doing too much too soon. Work with a trainer to devise a safe workout plan that is built for you, not someone in peak physical condition. By being honest with yourself, you can train the right way and avoid injury.

You need to have a good working understanding of exercise and how it affects your body in order to get the most out of it. If you exercise too little or too much, you may not be getting the intended benefits from the effort, which would make it a pointless effort all together, or may end up getting you hurt or overworked in the process. Here is a basic look at what kind of exercise you should be doing and why it will benefit you to do it this way.

The first thing to understand is that 30 minutes of exercise a day is usually more than sufficient. If you exercise for 30 minutes at least three times a week, you will improve your health by getting your heart going and burning additional calories. What most people are unaware of is that following a good workout, you will continue to burn calories based on your muscle mass and how hard your heart is working. So not only are you burning 30 minutes of exercise worth of calories, but your body will continue to burn calories for a good long while afterward, improving your health significantly. Here are some other things to keep in mind:

- You need to walk every day. You should aim for 10,000 steps in a day accumulated throughout the day. This includes steps from the bed to the bathroom, down the stairs into the kitchen, and however much walking is required to get you to work. You should also aim to do about 30 minutes of continuous walking a day if you can, as this will benefit your entire body, especially your heart.

- If you want to build muscular strength which, as we touched on, will benefit your weight loss, you should aim to do thirty total minutes of resistance exercise per week. Break this into 3 10-minute weight lifting sessions during the week and you should be just fine.

- Getting the right amount of cardiovascular exercise has to do with your maximum heart rate and exercise at 80 percent of this. Take 220 and subtract your age. This is your maximum heart rate. Try to achieve this maximum heart rate for 20 to 30 minutes, three times a week. If you are 50 years old, your maximum heart rate is 136 beats per minute, which is 220 minus 50, for 170, times 0.8.

- For optimal flexibility, which is an important part of getting physically fit and healthy, you should be stretching for approximately five minutes per day. Keep in mind that you should always warm up before you stretch rather than treating stretching as the warm up itself. If you have not warmed up, your muscles will be stiff and cold and much more apt to suffering injuries. Walk around for a few minutes to get your body going, then stretch when everything is feeling warm and limber.

Most of us have at least one spot on our bodies that we would like to change. Commonly referred to as “problem areas,” if you are serious about making a change, you’ve got to find a way to target that area. While full body exercise is vital, there are many benefits to spending a few extra minutes targeting your problem areas to get better results. Here are some great tips on how to easily turn those problem areas into your pride and joy.

Stomachs –

For many people this is a big problem. The prevalence of “six pack abs” in the media is difficult for many people to get around. To start targeting this area, it is important to reduce your fat intake and get more cardio exercise. While crunches will build up your muscles, if you are not first losing the fat that covers them you won’t be able to see the results of your effort. For women, it is also important to realize that it may not be physically possible to have a completely flat stomach. Just try your best and don’t let the media dictate how flat your stomach should be.

Arms –

This is actually a pretty easy area to target and since most people don’t have a lot of fat build up on their arms, you can see results pretty quickly. In addition to your regular cardio or aerobic routine, add in a little strength or resistance training. This can dramatically produce results in a few short weeks, especially if you keep with it. For women, strength training has many benefits, and contrary to popular belief, a little light training will not make you look like a body builder.

Hips and Thighs –

For many women this is a big problem area and while it is possible to reduce this area, it is important to realize that your frame and genetics may impact just how small you can get. Focus on getting toned first, and keep up with the cardio and other fat burning exercises. You will see results, and over time, this area will get smaller if you can stick with it.

Rear Ends –

By far, the best way to tone up a rear end are squats and lunges. However, you’ve also got to burn fat in order to see those results, much like with your stomach. Focus on adding a few squats to your regular exercise routine, but don’t ditch your cardio. You need to keep burning fat in order to get big results on your rear end. Stairmasters are also another great solution for firming up your rear, and simply taking the stairs at work can also have a big impact.

Remember, no matter how bad your problem area may be, you can’t let that physical real estate keep you from living your life. Focus on your good points and work towards getting fit. The rest will naturally fall into place if you keep with your lifestyle and exercise changes.

If you want to get on the road to a healthy and full life, you need to focus not only on losing weight, but also doing exercises that are going to benefit your most powerful organ, your heart. It may be tough at first, but it's important that you don't get discouraged. Start out slow and keep your goals in mind. Whether you need to reduce your cholesterol or lower your blood pressure, combining these tips with a healthy diet can get your body and your heart back in shape. Just make sure to hydrate!

Run

Let's get started with the first exercise that is probably the best for your heart. Running combines all of the essential ingredients into one exercise. You're getting your heart rate up, you're using all of your muscles and you're building endurance. The problem is, if you're pretty out of shape, running can be very difficulty. For those with knee problems or joint issues, running may not be an option. However, there are low impact ways that you can still get the benefits of running without hurting yourself.

Walk

Start out by walking for ten minutes at a slow pace. After this period of time elapses, walk fast for five minutes. Go back to walking slow for ten and this time, when you're done, jog for five minutes. This is the easiest way to start burning calories and just about anyone can do it. After the five minutes of jogging are done, go back to walking slowly for ten minutes. Repeat until about an hour has gone by. You'll have gotten your heart rate up and you'll have burned plenty of calories. You can gradually start increasing the amounts of running time as you get stronger.

Aerobic Workout

Next, aerobic exercise is also well suited for keeping your heart healthy. Again, you're probably going to need to start off slowly. It may be a bit difficult at first, but you can gradually increase your workout times to around 30 to 45 minutes a day. That's your target goal, but if you think you can do more, go for it! By reaching your target heart rate every day, you'll be not only helping your heart, but you'll also be improving your metabolism.

Swim

If neither of these sound like something you want to try, or you have joint problems, the next best thing to do is to try aerobic swim classes. Your joints won't have the stress and you'll still be working that heart muscle. You can usually find a water aerobics class at most gyms or even at your local YMCA. If you can't find one, just go to your indoor pool at the gym and try some exercises on your own. It's a lot easier to get started in water and you'll be able to build up your strength a lot quicker.

Your heart is the most vital organ you have and you need to treat it right. The good news is, even after a lifetime of abusing it, getting started on an exercise plan right now can help you undo that damage and provide you with some great benefits as well.
